The Weevil [Curculio] – this is one of Plautus' funniest comedies. Its title character, a clever parasite, helps a young man Phaedromus to get his beloved Planesium. Unfortunately, the girl belongs to the pimp Cappadox, and only a large sum of money could persuade him to change his mind and break the earlier contract with the soldier Therapontigonus Platagidorus. However, Curculio finds a solution – he plays dice with the soldier, and steals his ring used to seal contracts. So, there are in the comedy, therefore, the motifs of a forged letter, disguise, extorting money from the moneylender Lyco, cheatings. The stolen ring unexpectedly leads to the scene of the recognition and happy end. The merits of the comedy are not only the sudden plot twists and a procession of colorful characters, but also the linguistic humor typical of Plautus, consisting of puns and various wordplays.
