Księga jubileuszowa dedykowana profesorowi Eugeniuszowi Piotrowskiemu zawiera teksty wielu uznanych przedstawicieli ośrodków akademickich w kraju, dotyczące szeroko rozumianej edukacji akademickiej, zarówno w zakresie oczekiwań społecznych wobec niej, jak i też realiów jej funkcjonowania, a także kondycji współczesnego uniwersytetu.

This monograph contains texts that have been written by authors coming from many different academic environments in Poland. These texts deal with broadly defined academic education. For centuries university has been perceived not only as a place where tradition is cherished but also as a breeding ground for mo dernity and change. Contemporary education, and perhaps especially academic education, is facing the need to adjust to the changing reality. The many transfo rmations that are taking place in the political, economic, and cultural spheres make it urgent to refo rm higher education which should, on the one hand, adapt to the new image of the wo rld and, on the other hand, try to create a new reality of life if it wants to fulfill its mission. Under the conditions of a market economy traditional academic values are increasingly often being depreciated while new ideas related to mo dern fo rms of financing, management and marketing are gaining in impo rtance. The autho rs look for the answers to the questions about the extent to which university is still "the temple of wisdom" and how much it has become a company where economic calculation must be taken into account as well as what expectations academic environments have when faced with the realities of social life.
