Phonolapsology of graded readers in EFL: theory, analysis, application

PLN 12.00

This is a book about how graded (leveled) readers written for American children and adolescents can be adapted to the needs of English-as-a-Foreign-Language (EFL)
learners wishing to improve their pronunciation skills through reading. The adaptations discussed in this book focus on using the Phonetic Difficulty Index (PDI) to analyze the
inherent graded text pronouncing difficulties as potentially error-inducing (phonolapsology). Such analysis leads to phonetically enhancing the text in many ways to make
it an interactive resource, scaffolding the learning and acquisition of EFL pronunciation. This book consists of six chapters whose conceptual and research scope is directly
reflected in the title of the monograph. Chapter 2, treats about the theoretical issues concerning foreign language learning and teaching, especially the role of reading therein. In Chapter 3 a corpus of graded reader texts is introduced and discussed. Chapter 4 is a detailed presentation of the main phonolapsological analysis tool, the Phonetic Difficulty Index. The application of PDI to the corpus is described and discussed. The results of PDI analysis of our corpus are presented in Chapter 5: detailed phonolapsological statistics are obtained and discussed in-depth from various structural and functional perspectives. Finally, Chapter 6 contains a vision of how our phonolapsological findings could be practically applied to the (e-)text studied before. A number of specific techniques are proposed in this chapter, with a phonolexical focus, which utilize the inherent didactic potential of a PDI-annotated e-text.
