This book is addressed to advanced students of pragmatics, philosophy, and the philosophy of science. The common theme of the eight chapters is the epistemological relation between philosophy, science, and pragmatics in particular. From the semiotic point of view, human communication rests on the relations between signs and their users. This is a very vague and obscure assertion because it admits of many philosophical and scientific interpretations and in effect produces many frequently incompatible claims, hypotheses, and theories. In this book I discuss critically many of such philosophical and scientific controversies by referring to modern research in pragmatics and affective science including, inter alia, (1) the question of relations in pragmatics and its relevance to philosophy and others scientific disciplines, 2) the claims about the possibility of ‘universal pragmatics’ – especially, in the form proposed by Habermas; (3) the theory of Karl- Otto Apel’s ‘transcendental pragmatics’ and Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics; (4) the issue of intersubjectivity (5) the view of the Psychological Construction of Emotions from the perspective of Affective Pragmatics; (6) the project of explaining human action in terms of pragmatics; (7) the analysis of human communication in terms of action theory; and finally, (8) the critical approach to Willard van Orman Quine’s naturalized epistemology from the pragmatic perspective.

Książka jest przeznaczona dla zaawansowanych badaczy pragmatyki, filozofii i filozofii nauki. Wspólnym tematem jej ośmiu rozdziałów jest epistemologiczny związek pomiędzy filozofią, nauką i pragmatyką. Z punktu widzenia semiotyki, komunikacja ludzka opiera się na relacji pomiędzy znakami i ich użytkownikami. Jest to bardzo niejasne i mylące twierdzenie, ponieważ pozwala ono na różne filozoficzne i naukowe interpretacje i w rezultacie prowadzi do sprzecznych twierdzeń, hipotez i teorii. Monografia przestawia krytyczną analizę filozoficznych i naukowych kontrowersji, odwołując się do współczesnych badań nad pragmatyką i nauką o afekcie. Podjęta analiza obejmuje m.in.: (1) problem pojęcia relacji w pragmatyce i jego znaczenie dla filozofii i innych dyscyplin nauki; (2) twierdzenia o możliwości istnienia „uniwersalnej pragmatyki”, szczególnie w postaci zaproponowanej przez Jürgena Habermasa; (3) teorię „pragmatyki transcendentalnej” Karla-Otto Apel’a oraz hermeneutykę Hansa Georga Gadamera; (4) zagadnienie intersubiektywności; (5) spojrzenie na teorię psychologicznej konstrukcji emocji z punktu widzenia pragmatyki afektywnej; (6) wyjaśnienie ludzkiego działania za pomocą pragmatyki; (7) analizę komunikacji ludzkiej za pomocą teorii działania; oraz (8) krytyczną analiza epistemologii Willarda van Orman Quine’a z perspektywy pragmatyki.
