This seminal book is an attempt to summarise and chart new directions in the on-going historical debate relating to the formation and spread of Christianity throughout the European continent. The authors examine the processes of the emergence and consolidation of Christianity along with the birth of the foundations of the institutional Church within Imperium Romanum. The question of the Christíanisatíon of tribes and the emergent barbaric states is also explored. The study covers subjects up to the formation of medieval Respublica Christiana circa 1000, and, going beyond the issues of Christianity, addresses also issues appertaining to pagan religions in Europe and to other Christian denominations, Judaism and Islam.
