Monografia w zasadniczej części poświęcona jest postaciom operowym, stworzonym przez  kompozytorów i librecistów.  Funkcjonują one w różnych czasach historycznych, wśród wydarzeń doniosłych (wojny, rewolucje) i w codzienności. Książka stawia pytania o ich status społeczny, więzi z innymi, funkcje pełnione w społeczeństwie,  a nawet… lektury.  Analizy prowadzone są na materiale oper XVIII-XX wieku, wśród kompozytorów znajdujemy wielkich i sławnych (G. Verdi, F. Poulenck, U. Giordano, G. Puccini), a także mniej dziś znanych czy zgoła zapomnianych. Ważnym wątkiem są operowe historie kobiet, usytuowanych wobec okrucieństwa, któremu podlegają lub które same prezentują. Tematem prowadzonym równolegle są wyobrażenia muzyki żywione przez poetów i stworzone przez nie postacie (J. Słowacki, S. Marai).

This book is devoted in large part to opera characters created by composers and librettists. These characters function in different historical times, amid momentous events (wars, revolutions) and everyday life. The book explores their social status, ties with others, functions held within a community, and even… the books they read. The analysis is based on the materials of operas from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, by composers both great and famous (Verdi, Poulenc, Giordano, Puccini) and others now less well known or completely forgotten. An important strand consists of operatic stories of women in the context of cruelty suffered or perpetrated by them. Also explored in parallel are notions of music nurtured by poets and the characters created by them (Słowacki, Marai).
