Książka podejmuje problem rozwoju, trwałości i funkcjonowania siedemnastowiecznego piśmiennictwa serbskiego w określonym czasowo kontekście historycznym, politycznym, eklezjalnym i kulturowym. Prezentacja najważniejszych realizacji literackich i charakterystycznych fenomenów oraz ich systematyczne uporządkowanie służy określeniu podstawowego kształtu i specyfiki ówczesnej literatury, a tym samym lepszemu poznaniu niezbyt często wyodrębnianego z porządku periodyzacyjnego siedemnastego stulecia. Rozprawa jest z jednej strony klasyczną prezentacją literaturoznawczą, opisem zespołu reprezentatywnych dla siedemnastowiecznego systemu literackiego gatunków, tekstów, znamiennych konstrukcji ideowych i schematów narracyjnych. Z drugiej strony to próba zdefiniowania funkcji poprzez ekspozycję jego mnemotechnicznej zdolności, retrospektywnej orientacji, swoistych mechanizmów selekcji, rekonstrukcji, suplementacji wizji przeszłości. Zarysowany problem czasu, tradycji, relacji przeszłości i teraźniejszości w przestrzeni dzieła literackiego i systemie literatury stanowi próbę uchwycenia wielowymiarowej ich projekcji, wielokierunkowej zależności i stopnia zintegrowania, niezmiennie zaś określenia substancji tej literatury lub tylko potwierdzenia tezy o jej średniowiecznym profilu.

The dissertation should not be regarded as another version of history of literature or monograph on its subject, but as an outline problem of development and functioning of the Serbian literature in the seventeenth century, perceived from the view-point of history, politics, religion, and culture of the time. The presentation of the most important literary realizations and characteristic cultural phenomena, by putting them in order in accordance with sorting under their contents, is to establish a basic shape of literature, and to illuminate the seventeenth century, neglected by the scholar reflection and rarely distinguished from historical periodization and time known under the name of Turkish bondage. The considerations, contained in the work, were caused by a sequence of factors, however, a lack of the scientific interests regarding the very period of literary development turned out to be the essential one. Due to this lack, the dissertation tends to juxtapose with an incorrectly repeated conception according to which the academic discourse still examines and defines this literature in the categories of pre-orientation wherein the Baroque is identified with the Modernity. Furthermore, it articulates another important opposition that refers to a notion of the Serbian culture o f memory or community/society of memory since the very notion is often raised without a proper consideration, especially or only with regard to the eighteenth century and the canon of positive tradition, crystallized at the time. The dissertation therefore is on the one hand a classical presentation in the field of literary studies namely, a description of the genres, texts, significant idealistic constructs and narrative schemes, conceived as a paradigm of the Serbian literary system in the seventeenth century. On the other hand, it attempts to define the system’s functions through an exposition of its mnemonic ability, retrospective orientation, and peculiar mechanisms of selection, reconstruction, and supplementation concerning the vision of the past.
