Podjęty w rozprawie problem badawczy – zarysowany z perspektywy teoretyczno-filozoficznej – dotyczy kontrowersyjnej relacji między koncepcją tradycji i nowoczesności w twórczości dwóch wybitnych eseistów i myślicieli latynoamerykańskich XX wieku: Ezequiela Martineza Estrady i Octavia Paza. Choć w dysertacji uwzględnione zostaną różne teoretyczne dyskusje, to szczególnie uwydatniony będzie iberoamerykański kontekst ich myśli, kulturowe i społeczno-polityczne warunki, determinujące krytyczne postawy obu pisarzy wobec zagadnienia tradycji i nowoczesności. Wątki te przebadane zostaną w oparciu o powtarzające się w pisarstwie Estrady i Paza tematy-problemy, jak m.in: społeczna rola intelektualisty, tradycja literacka, krytyka nowoczesności i okcydentalizmu, napięcie pomiędzy historycznym dziedzictwem i utopijnymi aspiracjami, obciążenie kolonializmem, rewolucje estetyczne i polityczne.

The purpose of this book is to discuss the complex relationship between the concepts of tradition and modernity in Ezequiel Martínez Estrada’s (Argentina, 1895–1964) and Octavio Paz’ (Mexico, 1914–1998) important and influential essay corpus. With the focus put especially on the highly controversial notion of modernity it is argued, on the one hand, that Martínez Estrada departed from a very pessimistic appreciation of the historical political tradition of his homeland and ended his intellectual journey supporting a strong Latin-American stance as a response to the challenges of modernity. On the other hand, Nobel Prize Laureate Paz, although highly critical of certain aspects of the Mexican political tradition, recognized earlier than the Argentinean writer the inherently ambivalent nature of modernity and the necessity of a revitalized sense of human solidarity and cultural tolerance. Precisely, the recognition of this need can help pave the way for a more pragmatic and realistic approach to the diversity of problems that flow from the restless modern impulse.
