Monografia jest próbą usytuowania współczesnej fotografii jako sztuki w obszarze fleksji kulturowej. Punktem wyjścia jest pojęcie foto-tekstu wskazujące na ścisły i niejednoznaczny związek pomiędzy znaczeniami wizualnymi i kontekstem narracyjnym obrazów. Przedstawiono trzy najciekawsze, zdaniem autorki, miejsca styku fotografii i narracji: pierwsze – inspirowane teoriami strukturalnymi (koncepcje R. Barthesa i J. Bergera), drugie – prezentowane we współczesnych studiach wizualnych (np. M. Bal) traktujących równorzędnie obraz i tekst w teoriach, trzecie – w refleksji nad historią i pamięcią (P. Ricoeur), w której wizualne świadectwo pozwala stawiać pytania o sposób konstruowania narracji o przeszłości. Pokazano, jak narracyjne koncepcje badania obrazów mogą posłużyć do analizy współczesnej sztuki, a zwłaszcza trzech narracji kulturowych, których punktami zainteresowania są kolejno: natura w percepcji kulturowej, tożsamość w spojrzeniu fotografa-obcego oraz historia w pamięci społecznej.

The book is an attempt to locate contemporary “photography as art” in the area of cultural reflection. The starting point is the concept of photo-text, pointing to a close and ambiguous relationship between visual meanings and the narrative context of images. In my opinion, in the book are presented the three most interesting interfaces of photography and the narrative: the first, inspired by the structural theories are found in the conceptions of Roland Barthes and John Berger, the second - in the contemporary visual studies (among others, represented by Mieke Bal) demanding an equally thorough treatment of the image and of the text in the theories, and the third - a reflection on history and memory (Paul Ricoeur), in which a visual testimony allows to ask questions about how to construct a narrative about the past. The last part of the book shows how the narrative concepts of the study of pictures can be used for the analysis of contemporary art, and especially for the three cultural narratives, whose points of interest are in turn: nature in cultural perception, identity as viewed by a photographer-alien, and history in social memory.
