Autor prezentuje sylwetki dwóch francuskich pisarzy - Alfreda Poznańskiego (1883-1934), z dynastii żydowskich przemysłowców, dramaturga, którego liczne sztuki, pisane pod pseudonimem Alfred Savoir, stanowiły ozdobę paryskich teatrów bulwarowych, w przekładach zdobyły polskie sceny, w adaptacjach służyły jako scenariusze kasowych filmów amerykańskich. Drugim jest Joseph Kessel (1898-1979), syn biednych Żydów rosyjskich, dziennikarz, autor poczytnych powieści i ekranizowanych bestsellerów. Na losy i twórczość tych dwóch pisarzy autor spojrzał jako na pewien problem natury socjologicznej, czy ściślej: socjoekonomicznej. Interesują go oni z dwu powodów: jako piszący po francusku przybysze ze Wschodu i jako twórcy, którym udało się zdobyć popularność i pieniądze. Nazywając ich żartobliwie "pierwszymi, wschodnioeuropejskimi rycerzami nowoczesnej globalizacji kulturowej", w swojej książce opisuje mechanizm ich międzynarodowej kariery.

Coming from the eastern territory of the old Republic of Poland, and like many other artists and future artists of Jewish origin, Alfred Savoir and Joseph Kessel both found themselves in Paris, a metropolis which made possible a peculiar, and also just started at that time, activity at the interface of economy ("business" as it was said at that time) and literature. The first of them came from a family of rich industrialists, and was not guided by the desire for profits, which he did not need - he was interested in the "activity" itself as a kind of game. First of all he started writing dramas for the so called boulevard theatre. The other, younger author early in his life had to earn his living., but he was mainly passionate about adventures of a reporter, travels and a variety of journalistic and social contacts. It was only natural that both of them got interested in the then newest branch of industry which used literature - the cinema. It made possible the then most effective combination of economic activity and writing.
