Autor – geolog z wykształcenia, a ornitolog z zamiłowania – połączył w swej rozprawie obie te dziedziny, wykorzystując dane pochodzące z badań współcześnie żyjących ptaków do interpretacji materiałów kopalnych. Dane dotyczące warunków życia zwierząt współczesnych wykorzystywane są powszechnie do interpretacji czwartorzędowych materiałów kopalnych, lecz w tym wypadku precyzja wnioskowania jest większa. Autor udowadnia, że wskaźniki termiczne opracowane dla współczesnej fauny są przydatne w rekonstrukcji klimatu na podstawie materiałów kopalnych.

The main aim of the study is to reconstruct average July temperatures in the area of today's central and southern Poland in Vistulian (Weichselian) based on the fossil bird remains coming from cave sediments. For this purpose a method of calculating thermal indices introduced by Demarcq, Mourer-Chauvire (1976) was applied.

The literature data on taxonomy of the Vistulian bird bone remains and data on minimal number of individuals of the recognized species are summarized. Most of the remains come from Eagle Owl (Bubo bubo) pellets. It was shown that they belonged almost exclusively to the species that in the past nested in the vicinity of the caves.

It was proved that thermal indices calculated on the basis of bird bones from contemporary Eagle Owl pellets are representative of Europe's climatic zones. Statistical relationships between the thermal indices and average July temperatures were estimated as high. In consequence thermal indices for Vistulian cave sediments (layers) were calculated and 11 average July temperatures (expressed in °C) were proposed. They refer to: Early Vistulian (Odderade?), Plenivistulian (Schalkholz, Hengelo, Denekamp) and Late Vistulian (Bolling-Allerod, Younger Dryas). All the proposed temperatures were compared with the data on climate coming from sedimentological and palaeozoological study realized in caves taken into account. Finally, they were discussed in the light of many other data on palaeotemperatures in the area of today's Poland in Vistulian.

Another widely discussed topic is the age of bone remains from the studied cave sediments. 26 bone samples coming from 6 caves were dated using the AMS radiocarbon method. The majority of the samples yield an age which disagrees with the stratigraphy proposed in literature for the sediments they come from. Some reasons of those divergences were proposed.
