Children with mild intellectual disability display perceptual and motor disorders already in early childhood. Since systematic screening does not cover these issues, the time of therapeutic intervention is postponed until preschool time and early school years. Moreover, quite often, problems with auditory perception are not revealed until a child is being statemented. Psychological tests carried out in the aforementioned process indicate children’s poor active and passive vocabulary, as well as their difficulties in understanding oral orders. Even though auditory perception is closely linked with speech development, it is not evaluated in detail during these tests. Consequently, there is no information in papers received by a school about a child’s difficulties in diversifying sound stimuli; sometimes, there is a mention about problems with dictation. Researchers examining the issues of children’s functioning point out the difficulties they encounter in understanding and distinguishing utterances and the pathologically prolonged time of sounding the sounds and spelling them out. The above disorders may be caused by disruptions in auditory perception. It cannot be claimed that they are conditioned by intellectual disability, however popular the thesis is in special needs education. According to Kutcher (2009), auditory perception disorder and intellectual disability may have the same aetiology or a different one, or the former may be the reason for lowered intellectual capacity.
