Książka stanowi omówienie jednego z najciekawszych zjawisk współczesnej prozy: twórczości Wiesława Myśliwskiego.  Autorka  podejmuje pionierską próbę interpretacji powieści autora „Nagiego sadu” w kategoriach nowoczesności, dowodząc, że są one diagnozą stawianą współczesnemu światu, wyrażoną językiem nowoczesnej, modernistycznej powieści. Wychodząc od pojęcia doświadczenia, Kaniewska pokazuje z jednej strony podstawowe problemy, jakie porusza w swym pisarstwie Myśliwski (stosunek człowieka do historii, tożsamość nowoczesnej jednostki, potrzebę poszukiwania sensu w opowieści), z drugiej strony: sposoby artykulacji owego doświadczenia i ich konsekwencje nie tylko dla dzieł omawianego twórcy, ale także dla takich, zadomowionych w literaturoznawstwie pojęć jak epickość, powieść inicjacyjna, monolog wypowiedziany.

The present study presents Wiesław Myśliwski as a contemporary writer creating a picture of the condition of modem man. The first part focuses on the image of a man entangled in history. One of the determining factors in Mysliwski's fiction is the existential experience of history, which is relevant to the extent that it interferes with the destiny of individuals and influences a single human life. The characters' biographies are stuck between existence and history that shapes existence. The individualization of history in Mysliwski's fiction is reflected in his epic which is based on additivity and descriptiveness.
The second part indicates that the consciousness of Mysliwski's characters seems to be the consciousness of modem man who is faced with the need for self-determination. A world devoid of the sacred and the profane requires propensity to generate individual reference frameworks and/or axiological horizons. The importance that Mysliwski's characters attach to their own childhood and the process of growing up in order to understand the surrounding world allows one to situate his novels in the context of Entwicklungsroman.
The third part expounds the issue of articulation and, consequently, a reflection upon the word.
The form of Mysliwski's novels is regarded as a cross-cultural phenomenon consisting of the elements of orality (archaic culture) and literacy (modern culture). At this level there appears to be a fusion of speech and writing, orality and literacy, ritualistic peasant discourse and highly aesthetic stylistic means that are typical of sophisticated writings.
