W pracy dokonano analizy i opisu przestrzeni edukacyjnej, w jakiej rozwija się i uczy dziecko w okresie późnego dzieciństwa. Głównymi kreatorami tej przestrzeni są rodzina i szkoła. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pokazują jednak, że podmioty te nie tworzą spójnego, zintegrowanego środowiska, a jakość ich wzajemnych relacji jest niezadowalająca z punktu widzenia optymalizacji rozwoju dzieci.

This book examines the issue of cognitive development in relation to environmental supports for 143 ten-year-old children and their parents. It is believed that for children to be successful there must be an array of learning supports around them. These supports include schools, families, out-of-school programs and activities, libraries, museums, health centers and other community-based institutions. When they make linkages to build environmental learning context and support, they are able to reinforce and sustain the child's development. There is a need to define the role of the local environment in the context of children's development and relationship between the quality of learning environment and particular social/educational features connected with local environment itself as well as teachers' and parents' attributes.
