Wyróżnienie w Konkursie na Najlepszy Podręcznik Akademicki (XVI Poznańskie Dni Książki Naukowej)

Publikacja stanowi syntetyczne opracowanie materiału onomastycznego celem przedstawienia dziejów Polski ostatnich dwóch wieków w aspekcie kulturowym i politycznym. Zawiera wiele ważnych i ciekawie ujętych wiadomości z zakresu językoznawstwa, historii kultury i historii politycznej naszego kraju i Europy, dotyczących relacji kulturowych Polska – Europa, jak również wewnętrznych dziejów różnych regionów naszego kontynentu. Nawiązuje bezpośrednio do wydanej w 2007 roku książki „Polska a Europa w świetle nazw geograficznych” - jest jej kontynuacją pod względem chronologicznym, lecz prezentuje znacznie szersze spojrzenie na całość przedstawionej problematyki.

This book presents changes which occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries in Polish names of places in the area of Europe. Names of states, countries and some parts of the countries, i.e. choronyms and names of towns and cities, i.e. urbonyms have been taken into consideration in order to explain naming processes, the authors often referred to their relation with historical and cultural facts. In the 19^th century, after choronyms of ethnic origin had been reduced and replaced by forms with the suffix -ja, which dominated this category of names, five names from their oldest stratum were preserved. In the 19^th century in Germany and Italy numerous choronyms disappeared which co-functioned with urbonyms as a result of unification processes, which took place in both countries. In the 20^th century abbreviations using letters for choronyms consisting of several words were a new type of names. The main problem of urbonyms from Western Europe was the introduction of most of the modern foreign forms in place of Latinised forms and forms with the suffix -a, which were created under the influence of French names adapted to Polish inflection. Modern foreign names, which replaced them, increased the stock of Polish uninflected names. On the urbonyms of nations subordinated by Austria, Prussia and Turkey the influence of German and Turkish languages was evident, which was removed after the respective countries regained sovereignty.
