Część empiryczna poprzedzona została wprowadzeniem teoretycznym obejmującym przegląd piśmiennictwa dotyczącego genetycznych i hormonalnych mechanizmów regulacji okresu rozrodczego kobiet.

Menarche and menopause make key moments in a woman's reproductive biology as they initiate and terminate her reproductive period.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the participation of the genetic and environmental components in shaping of the biological phenomena of menarche and menopause. This study is based on data collected during cross-sectional questionnaire carried out in 2006-2012 in 1027 mother-daughter pairs and 836 sister-sister pairs, living in the Wielkopolska Voivoidship. A comprehensive approach to the investigated phenomenon has permitted to formulate the following conclusions: 1) Genetic factors play a superordinate role in outlining biological phenomena that are determinants for reproductive period in women. 2) Genetic factors in the interaction with environmental factors outline time of occurrence of menarche and menopause. 3) Favourable environmental factors influence an earlier occurrence of menarche and a later occurrence of menopause, which in turn causes prolonged reproductive period in women.
