Książka stanowi opis studium przypadku i jest podsumowaniem projektu badawczego przeprowadzonego podczas studiów doktoranckich.  W pierwszym rozdziale autorka przedstawia model komunikacji rodzic – dziecko autorstwa Lauren Adamson i pokrótce omawia jego przydatność do analizy mowy skierowanej do dzieci. Następnie zamieszczono bardzo szczegółowy obraz umiejętności komunikacyjnych i językowych dzieci w pierwszym roku życia. Dwa kolejne rozdziały to opis mowy skierowanej do dzieci starszych i do niemowląt. Autorka opisuje zarówno to, jak rodzice dostosowują składnię, wymowę i treść swoich wypowiedzi do etapu rozwoju dziecka, jak i teorie tłumaczące źródła tych dostosowań i ich rolę w rozwoju języka. Motywami przewijającymi się przez całą pracę są uwarunkowania ewolucyjne mowy skierowanej do dzieci oraz problemy metodologiczne w jej analizie. Ostatni rozdział to opis samego projektu badawczego, podczas którego autorka śledziła zmiany w mowie rodziców do dziecka w pierwszym roku życia. Analiza objęła zarówno treść, formę, jak i funkcje wypowiedzeń kierowanych do dziecka oraz różnice między mową matki i ojca. Wyniki sugerują, że różne aspekty mowy skierowanej do dziecka zmieniają się wraz z jego rozwojem, a także pokazują różnice między użyciem języka przez matkę i ojca w komunikacji z dzieckiem.

The book describes a case study done as part of a PhD research project. In the first chapter the author presents Lauren Adamson’s model of parent-child communication and discusses its application in the analysis of child-directed speech. Next, the author provides a detailed description of communicative and linguistic abilities of children in the first year of life. The following two chapters describe child- and infant-directed speech. The author presents not only adaptations made by parents in terms of syntax, pronunciation, intonation and content, but also theories accounting for the adaptations and their impact on language development. Two motifs run throughout the whole book: firstly, evolutionary underpinnings of child-directed speech and methodological issues inherent in its analysis. The last chapter presents the research project itself. The author tracks changes in parents’ speech to their child throughout the first year of life. The analysis covers the form, function and content of utterances directed to the child and differences between the mother’s and father’s speech. The results show that different aspects of infant-directed speech do change with the child’s development. Also, the parents’ use of language when addressing the child proves to be different.
