Praca jest ważną pozycją w polskim piśmiennictwie etnomuzykologicznym. Autorka omawia mało znane, oryginalne formy tradycyjnych wielogłosowych śpiewów w europejskiej części basenu Morza Śródziemnego, od Bałkanów po Portugalię. Chce określić swoistość form i odmian tradycyjnej wielogłosowości występującej na tych obszarach, ich genezę, istotę i zasięg. Autorka nie rezygnuje z tematyki historycznej, nie pomija podejść ewolucyjnych i komparatystycznych. Szczególnie cenne są rozważania dotyczące brzmienia oraz sposobów współtworzenia utworu przez ludowych wykonawców. Próba połączenia tych podejść (etnomuzykologicznego i historycznego) pozwala na wyraziste postawienie ważnych pytań natury metodologicznej.

The presented study is yet another examination of the existence of a great cultural community in the region of the Mediterranean basin, which upon numerous occasions recurred in musicological and extramusicological literature. This time, an attempt at defining the features of the Mediterranean idiom was made in reference to traditional local polyvocality. The examined reality is interpreted both in the conceptual categories of the creators and the users of a given musical culture (emic viewpoint), as well as described from the stance of an outside observer (etic viewpoint). One of the primary issues appears to be the acknowledgement within the discussed cultures of the foremost role of the sonorous qualities of music. They merge as a result of the cooperation of a number of different factors; a phenomenon which in this work is described as sonoristri. an intentional shape of music as well as in concrete performances, became one of the main research tasks.
