Monografia zawiera obraz działalności i zmian szkoły średniej ogólnokształcącej, będącej jednym z najważniejszych elementów w systemie oświatowym, przygotowującym młodzież do studiów wyższych, a tym samym uczestnictwa w formowaniu elit intelektualnych społeczeństwa. W latach 1944-1989 szkoła tego szczebla edukacji stała się istotnym punktem zainteresowań ówczesnych władz państwowych, których założeniem w ramach obowiązującej polityki było podporządkowanie sobie obywateli poprzez zniewalanie ich umysłów. Szkoła średnia ogólnokształcąca była wówczas miejscem, gdzie w sposób najbardziej wszechstronny kształtowano przyszłego „podwładnego”. W pracy dokonano analizy działalności i przemian, jakie zachodziły na gruncie tej szkoły w obszarach: organizacyjnym, strukturalnym, dydaktycznym, wychowawczym. W ten sposób starano się ukazać jej funkcjonowanie, ale również nasilający się i osłabiający poziom ideologizacji i indoktrynacji w warunkach ówczesnego ustroju socjalistycznego. Ukazano również efekty tych oddziaływań, tj. zmieniające się postawy i reakcje zarówno młodzieży, jak i nauczycieli liceów ogólnokształcących, szczególnie w latach 80., przedstawiając rzeczywisty obraz szkoły średniej ogólnokształcącej w Polsce Ludowej.

This monograph presents the functioning of as well as changes in general secondary education in Poland in the years 1944-1989 with regard to the following areas: organizational, structural, didactic and educational. A secondary school of general education at that time was under a strong influence of the socialist party, which is why all the changes related to its functioning are presented in such a context. This monograph presents the process of how the party's impact on school during particular time periods either became stronger or weaker, and also the influence it had on the organization of schooling, the curriculum and its implementation as well as education in these periods. It shows how the party's authorities indoctrinated young people through school and also through the schoolrelated environment (e.g. youth organizations). Also, attention was paid to the role of the overall environment in the shaping of education as well as the extent of the influence it had on schooling (e.g. the role of the Church and its involvement in school life; the oppositionist activity of school communities). This monograph also characterizes communities that were directly related to secondary schools of general education, namely of teachers and students. As for teachers, the aim was to present the evolving level of their professional preparation during the described periods as well as their approach to the state's policy and, consequently, the extent to which they implemented the "official" educational policy, as designed by the authorities, in schools. Furthermore, attention was paid to the attitudes held by teachers, i.e. their diversity, and the often occurring "defiance". As for students, their social background and attitudes were presented, as well as their involvement or lack of involvement in "school life" and reactions to particular political developments.
