Książka stanowi syntetyczne opracowanie dziejów włoskiej kultury muzycznej w perspektywie funkcjonowania patronatu artystycznego. Jej ramy czasowe wyznaczone są z jednej strony przez rok 1470, zbiegający się z początkiem patronatu muzycznego na głównych dworach Italii, z drugiej zaś przez rok 1527, stanowiący wyraźną cezurę wynikającą z dramatycznych wydarzeń zajęcia i splądrowania Rzymu przez wojska cesarskie (sacco di Roma) oraz innych oznak kryzysu w głównych centrach muzycznych. Autor śledzi rozwój patronatu muzycznego i społecznych form organizacji kultury, uwzględniając zarazem różnorodne aspekty stylistyczne muzyki tworzonej tak przez przybyszów z północy Europy (oltremontani), jak i przez muzyków rodzimych. Książka uwzględnia bardzo różne, traktowane dotychczas oddzielnie, zjawiska i gatunki muzyczne, łącząc ich analizę z nowszą refleksją metodologiczną. Publikacja, pełniąc rolę podręcznika czy też kompendium wiedzy faktograficznej, może być źródłem inspiracji do dalszych studiów nad dziejami kultury muzycznej we wczesnonowożytnej Europie.

This is the first synthetic Polish monograph that deals with the history of Renaissance musical culture in Italy from the perspective of musical patronage. The year 1470 marks the beginning of this period which coincided with the development of musical patronage on an unprecedented scale that commenced with the beginning of the rule of Galeazzo Maria Sforza in Milan (1466), Lorenzo de' Medici in Florence (1469), Pope Sixtus IV in the Holy See (1471) and Ercole I d'Este in Ferrara (1471). The year 1527 clearly marks the end of this era which resulted from the dramatic events related to the conquering and plundering of Rome by Caesar's army (sacco di Roma) as well as other signs of crisis in the most important cities of Italy at that time. The author follows the development of musical patronage and the social ways of organizing culture while taking into consideration various stylistic aspects of music which was created both by incomers from transalpine Europe (oltremontani) and domestic composers. He tries to answer the question of whether and how patrons contributed to stimulating creativeness and influenced the process of creating works as well as their content, form, style and the way in which they were disseminated. This book takes into account very different phenomena and music genres that have so far been dealt with separately by combining analysis with an up-todate methodological reflection. The publication, which is a compendium of the latest factual knowledge, may be a source of inspiration for further studies on the history of musical culture in early modem Europe.
