Książka prezentuje badania nad świadomością estetyczną, a także niektórymi wyobrażeniami właściwymi kulturze XIX wieku. Autorka odczytuje je poprzez interpretację pewnych form dramatycznych, takich jak drama czarodziejska, libretta operowe oraz staropolskiej proweniencji dramat religijny i obyczajowy. Pierwsza część książki dotyczy dramy i przedstawionego w niej obrazu świata, który cechuje zarówno daleko posunięta petryfikacja kulturowych symboli, jak i ich swoista dezorganizacja. Dwie następne części zostały poświęcone XIX-wiecznym librettom operowym i estetyce opery. Część ostatnia traktuje o wykreowanej przez krytykę połowy XIX wieku swoistej "utopii źródeł" narodowego dramatu. Praca prezentuje punkt widzenia historyka literatury, korzystającego obficie z badań teatrologicznych i muzykologicznych.

The book presents the results of a study of both 19th century music-related drama forms and also the literary and theatrical criticism of these times, which sought a way to improve the condition of the dramatic art in Poland. The first part of the dissertation is dedicated to "magical drama" (the German term: das Zauberdrama), which originated from Vienna and was very popular with Polish theaters during the first half of the 19th century. The two following parts deal with the poetics of libretto (including Der Freischutz by C. M. Weber, so called "national operas" by J. Elsner and K. Kurpinski) and the relationship between opera and literature as in the case of Faust by Goethe and Faust by Gounod. The last part of the work is concerned with the role of Old-Polish drama in the shaping of the dramatico-theatri-cal imagination in Poland around the mid 19th century. The work is also an inquiry into the history of literary forms and the history of artistic awareness. Research looks at the subject from the perspectives of the history of literature, the history of theather and aesthetics and in restricted terms- musicology.
