Publikacja poświęcona relacjom łączącym w okresie międzywojennym czeską literaturę wysoką z kulturą popularną. Rekapituluje poglądy badawcze (głównie polskie i czeskie) na temat cech strukturalnych i sytuacji komunikacyjnej literatury (i kultury) popularnej; rekonstruuje polemiki wokół niej, stanowiące istotny składnik klimatu duchowego dwudziestolecia międzywojennego w Czechach oraz ukazuje konkretne przykłady, mechanizmy i metody inkorporowania „wyróżników trywialności” w twórczości czołowych przedstawicieli czeskiego życia literackiego lat dwudziestych i trzydziestych: Čapków, Polačka, Vančury, Olbrachta, Nezvala, Váchala i innych. Głębsze przyjrzenie się owym metodom i mechanizmom prowadzi do wniosku, że wieloaspektowe „gry z tandetą” nie stanowią wyłącznie „znaku rozpoznawczego” formacji postmodernistycznej, ale odegrały również istotną rolę w kształtowaniu poetyk modernistycznych.

From the beginning of the twentieth century popular literature (and culture) slowly and gradually started to reach a wider audience and gain control of areas hitherto governed only by the elite literature (and culture). The replacements of that time were leading to the far-reaching revisions which were evolving in the seemingly inviolable and constant system of central and marginal cultural domains. Czech writers of the interwar period (Karel Čapek, Josef Čapek, Eduard Bass, Ivan Olbracht, Josef Váchal, Karel Poláček, Vitĕzslav Nezval, Ladislav Klíma) in the above mentioned situation were trying to redefine the order of esthetical values and to reunify the cultural field. To achieve their goals, they put forward many proposals regarding specific intertextual strategies and techniques – from the minor concessions to the predilections of artistic rubbish consumer, through the deconstructive operations of paradigms originated from the isolated levels of cultural hierarchy (sensationalism vs. philosophical discourse, or avant-garde innovation vs. convention), to the overt parody and pastiche. By activating the mechanisms of inclusion, the authors of that time were determined by a need of some various functional factors (ideological, ethical, philosophical) derived from the absorbed structures, although they didn’t belittle the meaning of self-referential procedures which revealed the methodological problems illustrating the relationship between fiction and reference, or asking about the possibilities and devices regarding literary (lingual) representation of reality.
