Jest to pierwszy polski przekład mowy pochwalnej Klaudiusza Mamertinusa, konsula roku 362, zatytułowanej Podziękowanie dla cesarza Juliana za konsulat. Autor wygłosił ją 1 stycznia 362 r. w obecności cesarza, inaugurując w ten sposób swoje urzędowanie na stanowisku konsula. Mamy do czynienia z panegirykiem, przedstawiającym Juliana Apostatę jako władcę idealnego, wśród poprzedników nie mającego sobie równego. Udostępnienie tego tekstu w języku polskim jest spełnieniem oczekiwań szerokiego grona badaczy oraz miłośników i znawców antyku.

Autor mowy, Klaudiusz Mamertinus (Claudius Mamertinus), był wysokim rangą rzymskim urzędnikiem i jednym ze współpracowników cesarza Juliana Apostaty (361-363). Za następców Apostaty, Walentyniana i Walensa, Mamertinus był prefektem Italii, Afryki i Ilirii, ale oskarżony o defraudację funduszy państwowych został usunięty ze stanowiska w roku 365. Prawdopodobnie pochodził z Trewiru.

This is the first Polish translation of the eulogy of Claudius Mamertinus, consul of the year 362, entitled Speech of Gratitude to Emperor Julian for his consulship. The author delivered it on 1 January 362 in the presence of the Emperor, thus inaugurating his office as consul. What we are dealing with here is a panegyric presenting Julian the Apostate as an ideal ruler without equal among his predecessors. Making this text available to readers of Polish meets the expectations of a wide range of scholars, as well as to enthusiasts and experts in antiquity.

The speechwriter, Claudius Mamertinus (Claudius Mamertinus), was a high-ranking Roman official and one of the collaborators of Emperor Julian the Apostate (361-363). Under Apostate's successors, Valentinian and Valens, Mamertinus was prefect of Italia, Africa and Illyria, but was accused of embezzling state funds, and was removed from office in 365. He most likely hailed from Trier.
