Przedmiotem rozprawy, usytuowanej na pograniczu literaturoznawstwa, filozofii i teologii, jest próba nakreślenia nowego statusu figury – zwłaszcza metafory – w podwójnym kontekście: hermeneutyki biblijnej oraz postmetafizycznych nurtów refleksji po Nietzschem i Heideggerze (od Levinasa do Mariona). Interdyscyplinarnym rozważaniom towarzyszą pytania o kondycję europejskiego chrześcijaństwa w epoce uznawanej powszechnie za pochrześcijańską: Czy zmierzch metafizycznego paradygmatu w kulturze Zachodu nie otwiera paradoksalnej szansy na reinterpretację biblijnego dziedzictwa? Czy postulowana przez Ricoeura ontologia metafory nie umożliwia wyjścia poza fatalną antynomię znaczenia dosłownego (zobowiązującego etycznie) i niedosłownego (sprowadzanego do retorycznej gry)? Refleksję dopełnia przegląd uprzywilejowanych figur współczesnej humanistyki (Daru, Kenozy i Wydarzenia) oraz próba ich transpozycji w figuralnej lekturze zapisków św. Teresy z Lisieux, Simone Weil i Emila Ciorana.

The subject of this dissertation is on the borderline between literary theory, philosophy and theology. The monograph attempts to determine the new status of figures of thought, in particular of metaphor, in the dual context of biblical hermeneutics and post-metaphysical trends of thought after Nietzsche and Heidegger (from Lévinas to Marion). These interdisciplinary analyses are accompanied by questions regarding the condition of European Christianity in an era which is commonly considered to be post-Christian: Is it not that, paradoxically, the twilight of the metaphysical paradigm in Western culture creates an opportunity to reinterpret the biblical heritage? Is it not that the ontology of metaphor which was postulated by Ricoeur makes it possible to abandon the unfortunate antinomy of literal (ethically binding) and non-literal meaning (reduced to rhetorical play)? These reflections are supplemented with a review of the privileged figures of thought in the modem humanities (Gift, Kenosis and Event) as well as with an attempt at their transposition through the figurai reading of texts written by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, Simone Weil and Emil Cioran.
