Autor nadzwyczaj wszechstronnie oświetla ten temat, sięgając zarówno po argumentację filozoficzną, jak socjologiczną i psychologiczną. Jest to zarazem nader instruktywny przegląd literatury przedmiotu. Autor odnosi się do najbardziej dziś znaczących teorii władzy. Problematyka władzy, w tym ujęciu, ma to do siebie, że włącza w swój zakres podstawowe zagadnienia filozofii jednostki i społeczeństwa: wolności i równości, indywidualizmu i wspólnoty, przemocy i dyskursu, subiektywności i obiektywności, związków poznania i moralności, kwestii zła i dobra natury ludzkiej itp.

The initial assumption of this book is a thesis, according to which, ower the recent half century of social thought, presentation of the nature of human ties has basically been split roto two models. According to the first model, society constitutes a functional whole; according to the other, society is divided into at least two antagonised groups (coercion theory of society). In my research work I concentrate attention on the two above theoretical models, which describe interpersonal relations in order to provide an answer to two basic questions: (1 ) What is the nature of power? and (2) Is it possible to establish a relation between consensus and coercion, communication free of disturbances and communication as a rhetoric means of influencing the partner in conversation? I argue that the alternative between "normative elements in social action" (integration theory of the society) and the factual "substratum of social action" (coercion theory of society) in fact indicates two levels of social analysis of social structure, which are in no way contradictory. The investigator is free to choose which of these levels he wants to emphasise more strongly - however he may be well-advised - in the interest of clarity as well as of comprehensiveness of analysis, not to stress one of these levels to the exclusion of the other.
