Rather than dismissing this idea out of hand as irrational, the author poses three interrelated questions: From what perspective and through what mode of argumentation would the German philologist's account of the gods—viewing them as “primordial phenomena” revealing themselves to the Greeks—be closer to the truth about the ancient Greek world? What repercussions would this have for our “rational” thinking about the world, as determined by modern historical sciences and their achievements? What kind of alternative knowledge and cognition does Otto's discourse embody? The author attempts to answer these questions in several steps. In the first step, based on John Keats's concept of “negative capability”, he outlines a general subjective stance that allows for serious consideration of Otto's thesis about the existence of the Greek gods. In the second step, referring to Martin Heidegger's philosophy, he attempts to show the assumptions and limits of scientific cognition that hinder or even prevent it from taking into account the “otherness” of the world under study. He then reconstructs the vision of ancient Greek experience present in Otto's work, an indispensable element of which is the idea of divinity present in it. In the fourth and fifth steps, he considers the extent to which the German philologist's chosen path of cognition brings him closer to this experience. To this end, the author uses Michel Foucault's perspective of the archaeology of knowledge to look at the specificity of Otto's discourse, focusing primarily on the functions of the ekphrasis and self-referential statements that appear in it, read in the mode of so-called immanent reading. In conclusion, he argues that the idea in question belongs to the tradition of spiritual knowledge.
