To pierwsza na polskim rynku systematyczna monografia poświęcona antropologii współczesności: jej genezie, rozwojowi, polom badawczym i narzędziom teoretycznym. Jest to reakcja na fakt, że pojęciem antropologii współczesności posługują się badacze w wielu krajach, nie można go jednak znaleźć w indeksach opracowań na temat historii dyscypliny. Autorska prezentacja ma ten stan zmienić, a zadaniu temu podporządkowano strukturę pracy. Od problemu „co” – w odniesieniu do pytań o przedmiot i możliwości wyodrębnienia pól badawczych, przez kwestię „jak” – dotyczącą formy badań, w ramach których praktykuje się specyficzne metody, do poziomu „reprezentacji” – czyli strategii przedstawiania rzeczywistości kulturowej.

Autor aplikuje do badań nad kulturą pojęcie defamiliaryzacji, czyli wyobcowywania bądź uniezwyklania tego, co swojskie. Analizuje nurt studiów nad własną kulturą w USA, Francji, Wielkiej Brytanii, Skandynawii, Polsce, a wyrywkowo także w Niemczech, Serbii i na Węgrzech. Testuje też użyteczność kategorii refleksyjności, ukazanej w kontekście kontrkultury i jej wrażliwości. Mottem monografii można uczynić z jednej strony stwierdzenie: „Praca antropologiczna nigdy nie jest wyłącznie pracą naukową”, z drugiej strony natomiast hasła „Exotic no more” oraz „Exotic at home”.

This work is devoted to anthropology of the contemporary, which is a subdiscipline of cultural and social anthropology. However, its status is yet to become firmly established. On the one hand, it is a term used by numerous scholars, but on the other, it is nowhere to be found in the indexes of historical studies on the development of this field. What we are dealing here with, then, is a subdiscipline which has not been examined thoroughly. The aim of this work is to present the origins of anthropology of the contemporary, the development of its methodology, theoretical approaches and narrative strategies, as well as its diversification through time and space. The general structure of this work has been established with this objective in mind. Therefore, it starts with the question of How, i.e. the forms of research within which particular methods are used (defamiliarisation); through to What, i.e. questions on the object of research and the possibility to delineate particular fields of study (anthropology at home); and finally, the level of representation, i.e. the strategy of presenting cultural reality which had been successfully delineated and defamiliarised (reflexivity). These three main issues are represented in the subsequent parts of this book.
