Monografia Antybohater. Horyzonty literatury i filozofii nowoczesnej to próba zmierzenia się z niezwykle nośną, aczkolwiek niedocenianą dotąd w polskim literaturoznawstwie postacią antybohatera. Autor pokazuje tę problematykę na przecięciu literatury, filozofii, historii idei oraz antropologii literatury. Zwraca uwagę na to, że pojęcie antybohatera przynależy do nowoczesnej formacji kultury europejskiej, w której dla modelu heroicznego człowieka pojawia się znacząca alternatywa. Antybohater jest pozbawiony heroizmu w sensie odejścia od powszechnie akceptowanych przez zbiorowość norm społecznych, obyczajowych i moralnych. Nie może być on jednak sprowadzony do prostego zaprzeczenia tym normom. Cechuje go raczej bunt i pełne ambiwalencji napięcia wynikające z pragnienia rozumienia siebie samego. W osobliwy sposób antybohater to indywidualista i outsider, który obiera drogę ku wnętrzu i poszukuje uzasadnień raczej w etyce autentyczności niż norm, w etyce wrażliwości, a nie zasad. Monografia dowodzi trudności z definiowaniem antybohatera, który każdorazowo domaga się coraz to nowych horyzontów rozumienia, wyznaczanych przez jego indywidualne społeczne uwikłania.

The monograph The anti-hero: Perspectives from modern literature and philosophy is an attempt to tackle the extremely popular yet hitherto underappreciated figure of the anti-hero in Polish literary studies. Prof. Januszkiewicz examines this issue at the intersection of literature, philosophy, the history of ideas, and the anthropology of literature. He points out how the concept of the anti-hero belongs to the modern formation of European culture, in which a significant alternative to the heroic model of humans emerges. The anti-hero is devoid of heroism in the sense of departing from the social, moral and ethical norms commonly accepted by the community. However, this figure cannot be reduced to a simple negation of these norms; rather, it is characterised by rebellion and ambivalent tensions stemming from a desire to understand himself. In a peculiar way, the anti-hero is an individualist and an outsider who chooses an inward path and seeks justification in the ethics of authenticity rather than norms–in the ethics of sensitivity rather than rules. The monograph also demonstrates the difficulty of defining the anti-hero, who constantly demands new horizons of understanding, determined by his individual social entanglements.
