Książka stanowi próbę przedstawienia na polskim rynku językoznawczym głównych osi współczesnego sporu dotyczącego opisu konstrukcji bezokolicznikowych i gerundiów w ujęciu gramatyki generatywnej, a w szczególności analiz wyrastających z założeń Programu Minimalistycznego Noama Chomsky'ego. Praca z jednej strony prezentuje podstawowe pojęcia podejścia minimalistycznego, wykorzystywane w badaniach składni i morfologii języka naturalnego oraz analizach porównawczych, a z drugiej obrazuje ich wykorzystanie i zastosowanie w krytycznej dyskusji dotyczącej konkretnego obszaru gramatyki, jaką stanowi derywacja i interpretacja wyrażeń bezokolicznikowych i gerundiów. Dużą zaletą pracy jest skoncentrowanie się na omawianiu różnorakich analiz dotyczących konstrukcji w języku polskim oraz angielskim i innych. In this monograph we discuss a large number of phenomena concerning the derivation and interpretation of infinitives and gerunds in English and Polish. We amply support our discussion with examples with the aim of placing our findings in a wider context of the current theoretical debate on control engulfing minimalist circles and concentrating on two major approaches. The approach based on movement (started in Hornstein 1999) is more radical, as it dispenses with two major assumptions common to more conservative generative paradigms: prohibition on movement from one thematic position to another and the postulate that Obligatory Control PRO is a legitimate member of the set of empty categories. The theory based on Agree (articulated in Landau 2000) is slightly more conservative, although it is also couched within the current mechanics of the latest minimalist model. A succinct outline of both approaches is followed by enumeration of major theoretical and empirical points of the debate, which sets the scene for an ensuing analysis of data from Polish in such areas as case inheritance and case independence in control constructions, subject control across an object, and finally control into gerunds and adjuncts. The data from Polish are considered through a comparative lens, with an eye towards the corresponding English facts and analyses that explore them and are available in the literature.
