Osobie z głęboką niepełnosprawnością intelektualną przez bardzo długi okres czasu odmawiano miejsca w przestrzeni edukacyjnej. Pojawiła się ona w niej dopiero na mocy Rozporządzenie MEN z dnia 30 stycznia w sprawie zasad organizowania zajęć rewalidacyjno-wychowawczych dla dzieci i młodzieży w stopniu głębokim (Dz. U. 1997 Nr 14. poz. 76). Niniejsza książka stanowi efekt realizacji projektu badawczego, którego celem było  ukazanie niejednoznaczności rozumienia statusu osoby z głęboką niepełnosprawnością intelektualną w polskim systemie edukacji. Ową niejednoznaczność oddaje w pełni termin rzeczywistość (nie)edukacyjna osoby z głęboką niepełnosprawnością intelektualną.

People with profound intellectual disabilities were denied their place in the Polish educational sphere for a very long time. These persons' needs were first recognized only in 1997 in the Regulation of the Minister of National Education dated 30 January concerning a rehabilitation and education program for children and young people with profound disabilities (Journal of Laws of 1997, No. 14, item 76]. However, the real status of people with profound intellectual disabilities in the Polish educational system is still ambiguous despite the long time that has passed since this regulation was adopted. This is why this monograph explores both the educational and non-educational reality
of a person with profound intellectual disability. This reality was presented in the context of Urie Bronfenbrenner's bioecological theory (1979, 2005] as part of a qualitative, instrumental, multi-case study which is explanatory in character. As a result, a grounded theory of the (non-] educational reality of a person with profound intellectual disability was formed which was reflected in the individual biographies of people who had participated in this research project.
