Praca ma charakter interdyscyplinarny. W naukach o organizacji i zarządzaniu ten nurt określa się jako "badania nad optymalizacją usług". W przypadku usług bibliotecznych systemów informacji naukowej mamy do czynienia ze znacznie szerszym kontekstem społecznym, łączącym się z procesami budowy tzw. społeczeństwa informacyjnego. Rozprawa jest poświęcona racjonalności działań związanych z udostępnianiem informacji w bibliotekach naukowych, ocenianych w kategoriach tzw. kryteriów efektywności.

This work is devoted to the method of evaluation of effectiveness of delivery of information in research libraries. This method - called the method of complex criteria - consists in the simultaneous consideration of several criteria. Criteria were selected which were important both to the administrator as well as the user of a library. These are: the time in which the request has been filled in and the time which has elapsed from the moment a source was bought and the time it became available, casts of maintaining the system; completeness, how big is the load of the system (number of requests carried out at given a time).
