Monografia poświęcona działalności archeologicznej przedstawicieli dwóch znakomitych rodów wielkopolskich: hrabiów Mielżyńskich i Tarnów, którzy przez kilka pokoleń – amatorsko, ale z wielkim zaangażowaniem – zajmowali się najdawniejszą przeszłością Polski; na terenie swych majątków ziemskich prowadzili wykopaliska, tworzyli dworskie kolekcje zabytków archeologicznych oraz wspierali finansowo i organizacyjnie różne przedsięwzięcia naukowe w tym zakresie. Część wykorzystanych przez autora materiałów jest wynikiem jego wieloletnich poszukiwań archiwalnych w kraju i za granicą. Książkę uzupełniają liczne ilustracje (barwne i czarno-białe).

Based on the hitherto unpublished archival sources, this book is devoted to the Wielkopolska (Great Poland) gentry's patronage and sponsorship of archaeological excavations and studies. It presents an unknown sphere of activities of two eminent families whose residences (the Mielżyńskis' Miłosław and the Turnos' Objezierze) were some of the Leading centres of Polish culture in the territories partitioned by Prussia. Archaeological amateurship of representatives of several generations of these families (including Seweryn Count Mielżyński) and also some ladies was focused on excavation works, collection of historical objects, material support of scientific institutions and publications. Its beginnings go back to the end of the 18th century, which is the time when Polish as well as European archaeology was being crystallised. Due to great cognitive value of the initiatives connected with ancient times and contacts with the then leading researchers of prehstoric times (e.g. W. Surowiecki, J.I. Kraszewski, W. Pol, W. Syrokomla, H. Feldmanowski, B. Erzepki and others) they involved, the contribution of the families of Mielżyńskis and Turnos should be very highly praised. This contribution, motivated to a high degree by patriotic feelings, has achieved its lasting place in the history of studies of the most ancient past of Polish territories.
