Przedmiotem opracowania jest zmarginalizowana w dotychczasowych badaniach powieść francuskiego symbolizmu, jej status gatunkowy i jej miejsce w historii literatury francuskiej lat 1884-1892. W pięciu rozdziałach, poświęconych najbardziej reprezentatywnym dla tego nurtu utworom narracyjnym, omówione zostają: wagneryzm Bourgesa w powieści Zmierzch bogów; idealizm filozoficzny Villiers de l'Isle-Adama w Ewie przyszłości, przejawiający się tu w postaci marzenia inżyniera o skonstruowaniu kobiety idealnej; praktyka monologu wewnętrznego w powieści Wawrzyny już ścięto Dujardina; schopenhauerowski intelektualizm w Sykstynie Gourmonta i wreszcie charakterystyczna dla symbolizmu poetyka analogii w Martwej Brugii Rodenbacha.

The subject of the work is the novel of French symbolism, marginalized in the research so far, its characteristic array of issues derived from different varieties of philosophical idealism and focused on the spiritual life of an individual as well as its peculiar aesthetics and original narrative techniques. The five chapters, devoted to the most representative narratives of the trend in 1884-1892, discuss: the Fascination with Wagner's work in the novel by Bourges Le Crepuscule des dieux; the dream of the ideal woman in L'Eve future by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam; the practice of the interior monologue as an expression of psychological life in the novel by Dujardin Les Lauriers sont coupes; Schopenhauer's excess of intellectual activity over real life in Sixtine by Gourmont and, finally, a typical for the symbolism rhetoric of the associations and analogies in Bruges-la-Morte by Rodenbach.
