The subject of considerations contained in this book is irony as a cognitive and ethic attitude, expressed through a distance to language. The focus of this work are considerations on four main ironists who have been selected by the author (namely, Rorty, Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Pascal), starting with the more modern one in order to show how this dimension of irony in which the author is most interested in sinks into oblivion. Pascal appears as the last ironist his wager appears as a paradoxical solution of the "ironic dilemma".

It seems that ethics precludes irony, makes law, and in this law there is no place for irony, but without irony it would not be possible to put ethics into effect. Irony is leaving an empty space where nobody has courage to look for it.

Realising that since irony is to be a view from the outside then it is not possible to have a look at irony from the inside - amongst the numerous definitions of irony, the author does not distinguish any of them, but only shows the development of problems inside several views from the outside (Rorty as the "last" one who exposes this category, Kierkegaard as the one who problematises irony through juxtaposition of Socrates and Christ, Nietzsche as the one who exploits irony "until the end" with the first negation in the history of philosophy of the greatness of Socrates, and Pascal as the one who juxtaposes irony with religion).

Irony is a process of constructing and maintaining the difference, its borders are movable since they are always the subject of fights to extend the area of the distance to the validity in force. In this book Readers will find several definitions of the word irony. The dispute over irony began for good starting with Soren Kierkegaard who referred this notion to sacrum. Recalling of Rene Girard's conception of the "scapegoat" as a background for the birth of symbolic violence and real persecution, which the ironists oppose, shows that their attitude even leads to the exclusion from the society. Hence the title of the book.
