Hermeneutic theories of understanding, created - among others - by W. Dilthey, M. Heidegger and H.-G. Gadamer, belong to the most influential streams of the contemporary philosophy. The development of this way of philosophical thinking by J. Habermas, K.O. Apel, G. Vattimo, O. Marquard and R. Rorty resulted in so-called hermeneutic turn philosophy. Its basis is the primordiality of the category of understanding, as an expression of the basic human attitude to the reality, which is connected with the special importance of such phenomena like language, interpretation, perspective, horizon, meaning and sense, combined with the contextualisation of the human subject, which means the historicity of mind. The hermeneutic philosophy, as a kind of modern prima philosophia, tries to keep contact with the modern philosophy of life. Together, they establish a new paradigm of philosophising and determine the philosophy of the future. This book is a study of the development of the hermeneutic philosophy from Schleiermacher and Nietzsche till today and an elaboration of the main structures of its present shape. Based on the hermeneutics of Gadamer, combined with that of F. Fellmann, it traces also the future development of this philosophical stream, starting from the naming of its most important, current problems and trying to solve them. Thus it is both a historical and a systematic introduction to the contemporary hermeneutic philosophy in its theoretical and practical dimensions.
