Fashion is often regarded as a chapter in the history of material culture and customs. Rarely has there been academic reflection on clothing or attire in literature and the fine arts as a component of a particular work, i.e. specifically, as a meaningful element of the depicted, fictitious reality that from the perspective of the contemporary reader, represents a world that has long since passed. The authors of the articles collected in the volume "Various fashions and discomforts" demonstrate that dress in literary texts is never merely a detail of realistic scenery, but rather a carrier of various meanings, including social, cultural, and aesthetic ones.
The book is the result of research conducted by literary scholars from various academic centres. The starting point was a theoretical reflection on the semantics of fashion. Jędrzej Krystek, Katarzyna Kuczyńska-Koschany, Martyna Olejniczak, Małgorzata Sokalska, Iwona Węgrzyn, Dariusz Trześniowski, Paulina Abriszewska, Justyna Bajda, Katarzyna Zagórska, Iwona Przybysz, Anna Cybulska, Radosław Okulicz-Kozaryn, Małgorzata Okulicz-Kozaryn, Agnieszka Marcelina Kołodziejska prove that the presence of fashion themes in literature is a never-ending story.
