PLN 26.00

Summary: Jole Stanišić, Open letter to the Communists of all Countries

The autobiographical testimony of Jole Stanišić (1929-2017), a Montenegrin and Yugoslav communist, taken from Barren Island, a Yugoslav gulag, is a harrowing chronicle of terror. His Open Letter to the Communists of All Countries was written in 1959, never to be published. The author, an unfailing proponent of this ideology, sent his testimony with an accusatory intention to the leaders of the world communist movement, who included Nikita Khrushchev (USSR) and Mao Zedong (China), warning against similar degeneration of the system. Jole Stanišić advocated the Stalinist version of communism in his youth and was subjected to terror by Tito’s Stalinist anti-Stalinists. This cruel paradox of history entangled the author of Open Letter to Communists of All Countries in traps which Professor Bogusław Zieliński, the author of the translation, extensive introduction and explanatory notes, successfully solves, presenting not only the literary qualities of the testimony, but also uncovering the circumstances of the formation of the Yugoslav state, the genesis of the Barren Island and the specific nature of its barbaric operations.

Stanišić’s dramatic cry for the fate of Titoism’s victims does not deprive his Letter of credibility, authenticity and sincerity. It forces the reader, while admiring the power of the word and the depth of humanistic commitment, to answer the question that Jole Stanišić leaves unanswered, namely how can one understand the phenomenon of this writer, a person so painfully afflicted by totalitarianism and yet so faithful to that ideology? The voice of Jole Stanišić is a cry emitted from the throat of a survivor, and at the same time from the depths of extermination, from a place cursed, but also sacred, because it was paid for by death and suffering.
