Przedmiotem studiów Sławomira Futymy jest zmysłowa natura człowieka jako problem wychowawczy, socjalizacyjny i inkulturacyjny. Autor dokonuje analizy funkcjonowania poszczególnych zmysłów człowieka – wzroku, słuchu, smaku, węchu i dotyku w świetle dotychczasowych badań w różnych dyscyplinach, preferując podejścia historyczne i antropologiczne, i zmierza ku koncepcji edukacji totalnej, łącznie formującej wszystkie zmysły. W pedagogice coraz śmielej przebija się problematyka cielesności, zwłaszcza płciowości i seksualności człowieka, a prawdziwą karierę przeżywają różne odmiany feministycznego podejścia do płci kulturowej (gender). The human senses lay the foundation for culture and civilization. They are the fundamentals of constructing the educational process. We could even call them "the educational architects of reality". All of the senses are instruments of human cognition which have a highly complex structure as well as anatomical compounds that are linked to the central nervous system. These sophisticated instruments let people control themselves and the world outside. Therefore, education is built on facts, that is on their practical dimension or, more precisely, on sensuous experiences. Seeing, hearing, touch, proximity and the sense of warmth, or of void as a direct consequence of the lack of all these feelings, create different pictures of the external world. This is why one of the requirements of education nowadays, which pertains to its effectiveness in impacting personal development, is that knowledge should be transmitted in a reasonable way and gained as part of the process of sensory engagement with the world. On one side, there is the world; on the other, there is a human being equipped with either sensitive or insensitive organs, whereas in between there is education with its institutional system and all its functions. This is the educational space of the present.
