Rozprawa poświęcona jednemu z najbardziej klasycznych zagadnień nowoczesnej i współczesnej myśli społecznej, jakim jest solidarność. Obok tradycyjnych ujęć problemu spójności społecznej (P. Leroux,  L. Bourgeois, E. Durkheim), proponuje również analizę pojęcia solidarności, która ujawnia się dopiero w trzech ostatnich dekadach dwudziestego wieku i jest rozwijana do dziś. W teorii racjonalnego wyboru (M. Hechter) oraz teorii działań i etyki dyskursu (J. Habermas) postawione zostaje pytanie o normatywne podstawy, warunki i formy ludzkiej solidarności w ponowoczesnym świecie. Dla filozofii społecznej zasadnicza trudność wiąże się z zagadnieniem uzasadnienia uniwersalnej międzyludzkiej solidarności wrażliwej na swoistości i lokalne praktyki. Współdziałanie, komunikacja i dialog zostają uznane za kluczowe kategorie w poszukiwaniu odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak racjonalnie powiązać i uzasadnić działania autonomicznego podmiotu z potrzebą tworzenia i podtrzymywania więzi społecznych.

The dissertation entitled The Principle o f Solidarity. A Study into Social Philosophy is devoted to one of the most fundamental areas explored by social sciences. From the standpoint of contemporary social philosophy, the study is seeking new postmodern foundations for a universal principle of solidarity, one that is sensitive to specificity and local practices. The first problem addressed by the monograph is the evolution of meaning ascribed to the concept of solidarity “from a legal standard to a political slogan”. To this aim, different historical contexts in which the modem idea of solidarity has functioned are outlined and discussed. The next objective the monograph sets itself is conceptual analysis of the notion of solidarity. Community, reciprocity, moral obligations and exclusion are recognized as the defining aspects of the concept. After the historical-analytical introduction the discussion turns towards a reconstruction of arguments of liberal criticism of solidarity and a critical reconstruction of three most theoretically advanced philosophies of solidarity including Emile Durkheim’s philosophical system, Michael Hechter’s rational choice theory and Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action and discourse ethics. The monograph ends with the conclusion that the Habermasian model of “solidarity through discourse” is the closest to the regulative ideal of universal solidarity. Cooperation, communication and dialogue are identified as central categories in the search for answers to the question of how actions undertaken by an autonomous entity can be rationally integrated and reconciled with the need to create and maintain social bonds.
