Książka ukazuje dzieje sceny polskiej w Poznaniu w latach 1850–1875. Autor omawia główne nurty widowisk oraz zamieszcza szczegółową rekonstrukcję repertuaru wraz z obsadami i bibliografią recenzji. Warto podkreślić, że dotąd nie istniało zestawienie tak szczegółowych danych repertuarowych zebranych na podstawie afiszy oraz doniesień prasowych. Istotnym elementem są dwie antologie, z których pierwsza zawiera wybór recenzji, druga – gromadzi teksty prasowe odzwierciedlające koloryt życia w Poznaniu w drugiej połowie dziewiętnastego wieku. Całość uzupełniona została przez odpowiednio dobrany materiał ikonograficzny, w obrębie którego znalazły się m.in. dotychczas nigdy nie publikowane afisze teatralne. W otwierającym tom  szkicu „Ku własnej scenie. Teatry polskie w Poznaniu w latach 1850-1875” uwzględniono nie tylko występy zawodowych zespołów teatralnych, lecz także inne rodzaje widowisk. Panorama „przedstawień poznańskich” złożona została więc z opisów cyrkowych popisów, tresury koni, koncertów muzycznych, pokazów doświadczeń z dziedziny fizyki i chemii, występów iluzjonistów, a także prezentacji przygotowanych przez polskie zawodowe zespoły teatralne.

This book aims to present the history of the Polish stage in the city of Poznań between 1850 and 1875. The book contains an outline describing the main currents in stage performances and provides a reconstruction of the theatre's repertoire for particular years, including original and revival cast, as well as a bibliography of theatrical reviews. Furthermore, two important anthologies supplement the book with additional depth to the presented study. The first anthology includes a selection of reviews, whereas the other is an anthology of articles and news features that reflect the local milieu and regional character of the life in Poznań in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Finally, the book is complemented with appropriately selected iconographic material that includes theatrical posters that have not yet been published. The catalogue of "Poznań-based performances" comprises descriptions of circus shows, circus horse training and riding shows, musical concerts, public shows of scientific experiments in physics and chemistry, conjurer's shows and, first of all, of stage performances prepared by Polish professional theatrical groups.
