This work is presenting a detailed study of the degradation mechanisms of environmentally and biologically important organic compounds employing radiation chemistry and ozonolysis. The most important innovations are: improvement of analytical methods for determination of organic hydroperoxides; design and development of model systems allowing to study the chemistry of the halogenated hydroperoxides and alkoxyl radicals separately; development of experimental methods for determination of key intermediates (*OH and O2*~ radicals) in ozone reactions. A firm set of rate constants for ozone reactions with DNA constituents and related compounds have been established. Reinvestigation of the ozonation of pyrimidines reveals the formation of highly reactive organic peroxides, providing a new concept for ozone chemistry. The presented work provides a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of free-radical-induced degradation and ozone reactions of organic compounds as well as of the possible environmental impact of those processes.
