The book Conrad i koniec epoki żaglowców (The end of the epoch of sailing ships) contains a series of interpretations of selected works of Joseph Conrad-Korzeniowski. The common feature of essays contained in it is drawing attention to the presence in Conrad’s writings of the fundamental masterpieces and toposes of the European culture, referred to in order to test the power of old tales in an epoch of the universally experienced crisis of values. In the centre of attention are placed by the author the ethical, those concerning worldviews, and even philosophical problems. Among the issues, touched upon in detail, are among other things: Conrad’s polemic with Rousseau’s authenticity ethic, evangelical motifs in the novel Victory, the Romantic and positivistic references in Conrad’s oeuvre, exotic rituals in a European’s eyes, decadence of contemporary philosophy, the topos of wondering topos, experience of emigration, the myth of the borderland and literary thanatology.
