Książka przedstawia w jedenastu studiach historyczno-literackich wybrane tematy łączące historię, politykę z poezją, krytyką literacką i publicystyką. Przedmiotem analiz są arcydzieła wieszczów i najwybitniejszych krytyków (twórczość Słowackiego, Mickiewicza, Mochnackiego) oraz zjawiska dziewiętnastowiecznej "kultury masowej" (teatr, prasa). The Battle for the Government of Souls. Studies on the Literature and Politics of the Great Polish Emigration

This book is a collection of studies on the Polish Romantic literature and its relations with the l9th century political problems: the loss of independence by Poland in 1795, the defeat of the November Uprising of 1830/31, the Spring of Nations of 1848/49. In the centre of issues discussed in the book are the journalistic works of Adam Mickiwicz (in the journals Pielgrzym Polski [The Polish Pilgrim] 1833 and La Tribune de Peuples [The People's Tribune] 1849), Juliusz Słowacki's poetry, Maurycy Mochnacki's literary criticism and political prose. The studies in this book combine observation of political and social experiences of Polish milieux, who emigrated to France in 1831-1849, with interpretation of forms of poetic and journalistic expression and aesthetic ideas (tyrteism, orphism) and philosophical ones (messianism, liberalism, socialism). An annex to the book gives M. Mochnacki s and A. Mickiewicz's unknown texts that appeared in press.
