The discussion presented here is centered around the significance of the prehistoric past as a subject of archaeological research in modern-day Poland (after the political transformation in 1989) as well as within the context of postmodern culture. The main aim of the book is a multi-aspect analysis of the social context of the functioning, expression and significance of the past and the ways in which it is evoked, both within and beyond academic discourse. It also attempts to define the role archaeology has, or ought to have, as a scientific discipline that investigates and interprets the past in the face of 21st century challenges and threats. The issues discussed focus on aspects such as the function of archaeology in society, the preservation and presentation of archaeological heritage, archaeological reserves and living museums, archaeology fêtes, historical reenactments and archaeological museums. I also investigate the question of the social functioning of archaeological sites, using the stone circle reserves in Pomerania as an example, in the context of various opinions and approaches regarding the interpretation of archaeological heritage and how it is applied in Poland today.
