„Docere” to jedna z uświęconych tradycją funkcji literatury. Rola mistrza przypada w pierwszym rzędzie samemu autorowi. Odzwierciedlają one (choć czasem to krzywe zwierciadło) zjawiska społeczne, prądy myślowe, ideologie i konflikty wartości, jakie kształtowały kulturę romańskiej Europy w różnych okresach jej dziejów.

This monograph is a collection of papers that were written by researchers of old Romance literatures and that deal with issues related to teaching and education as well as the masterpupil relationship. The authors reflect on topics such as literature's educational mission, ways of shaping moral attitudes and passing on intellectual achievements, the attitude to authorities, reception of antiquity, and disputes over the right to teach. There is a large group of papers that shed light on the issue of women's participation in education; women are presented as playing the roles of students as well as educators and mentors who either acted within the limits set by social norms or broke down moral barriers. The monograph closes with remarks about the methods of teaching and popularizing the literature and culture of past ages that involve making references to contemporary culture and using modem technologies.
