Izabella Łabędzka, "Zatańczyć niewidzialne. Tajwański Teatr Tańca Brama Chmur 1973–2019 "
The book is a monographic study devoted to the Taiwanese dance theatre. It is a result of a longtime research conducted by the authoress in Taiwanese and European libraries, academic centers an theatre archives. The research has been supported by several prestigious institutions such as: National Center of Science (Poland), DAAD (Germany), National Central Library and Chiang Ching-Kuo Foundation (Taiwan). This time the authoress presents the activities and metamorphoses of one of the most famous dance theatres in Taiwan – Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (Yunmen Wuji). In a masterly way she analyzes the most important choreographies of the creator of that world renowned dance group, Lin Huaimin. His works are situated in a broad cultural, philosophical and aesthetical context. The authoress shows how dance art can participate in a socio-political discourse and help to create an independent Taiwanese cultural identity. She presents numerous changes of Cloude Gate aesthetics in a broad comparative context: especially in the context of modern and contemporary dance in the West, other performing and fine arts and new technologies. The authoress discloses the wisdom of mixing the local traditions with the newest tendencies in contemporary art. Thanks to this attitude of Lin Huaimin it is possible to create inspiring both aesthetically and mentally dance compositions. Beautifull photos, mainly by Taiwanese photographers, not only document Lin Huaimin’s and his dancers’s choreographic works but add to the beauty and high intellectual quality of the book as well.
