The intention of the initiators of this publication was to provide young scientists with information about the directions of research that can be carried out in a synchrotron center, to include them in the community of users of synchrotron radiation and the creators of the future of the National Synchrotron Radiation Center SOLARIS, Krakow (Poland).

The opening to the users in 2018 of the first beamlines in NCPS SOLARIS was a breakthrough event for the Polish community of solid state physicists and chemists. It facilitated the access to modern research methods based on the use of this radiation for a wider group of researchers, but also created the task of proposing a scientific research program that allows full use of the unique properties of this large research infrastructure, as well as creating its new beamlines.

The book contains an introduction to the physics of synchrotron radiation, the methods of its production and the construction of its sources, as well as a collection of chapters presenting the possibilities of using this radiation as a tool in various fields of the sciences.

The authors have made every effort to ensure that each potential user can find here basic information about the fields related to synchrotron radiation that may be of interest to him and they hope that the book will be useful for master and Ph.D students of physics, chemistry or materials science, as well as for people who have no experience in the applications of synchrotron radiation but want to get acquainted with this topic.
